25 finalists announced for Maine Family Business Awards

After two rounds of elimination, 25 companies are on the short list for the 22nd annual Maine Family Business Awards, to be presented in October by the Institute for Family-Owned Business.

The statewide nonprofit said Monday it’s whittled down the roster of potentials from nearly 200 nominations, up from 166 last year. The 2022 finalists range from a winery to a construction firm to a pet supply chain.

Awards up for grabs include a customer service award, an environmental leadership award and a technology innovation award. Eligible businesses must be based in Maine, owned by someone who worked with or co-owned the company with another family member, and have “a commitment to the continuation of the enterprise release,” according to a news.

Here’s the list of this year’s finalists.

One awardee has already been announced. Frank O’Shea is the recipient of the 2022 BerryDunn Lifetime Achievement Award, which is awarded to “an active community member,” the release said.

Last year, the institute vetted 166 nominations before naming Zachau Construction of Freeport as the Renys Large Business of the Year — an award given to companies with 25 or more employees — for growing into one of southern Maine’s leading construction management firms over three generations.

Smiling Hill Farm, a centuries-old Westbrook dairy that also provides year-round farming education, recreation and entertainment, received the 2021 Maddy Corson Small Business Award, which is given to companies with under 25 workers.

The 2022 Maine Family Business Awards will be presented at a gala on Oct. 12. Mainebiz is among this year’s 30 event sponsors.

Keynote speaker will be Anthony “Tony” Simmons, the former president and CEO of McIlhenny Co., the Louisiana family business that launched Tabasco brand pepper sauce over 150 years ago.
