Business Spotlight: SD Happy Bins is available in Poway, Rancho Bernardo areas

Garbage and recycling bins can be home to tuberculosis, strep staph, E-Coli, salmonella and listeria. A family-owned business is working in the Poway area to keep bins clean.

SD Happy Bins is run by Tony Oliva and Jesus Perrez. The partners, who started their business a year ago, provide residential trash bin cleaning services at area homes.

“We do the footwork,” Oliva said.

SD Happy Bins brings a truck and trailer. Residents don’t have to be home at the time.

“Not many people know about it. We’re trying to spread the word,” Oliva said. “You can sign up on the spot really easy as well.”

The trash bin cleaning service is available in Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Rancho Penasquitos, 4S Ranch, Carmel Valley, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Black Mountain Ranch and Scripps Ranch. Oliva said they chose those locations because they are close to where he and his partner live — Oliva in Oceanside and Perrez in Chula Vista.

“That’s why we’re staying in that particular zone,” he said.

The partners said their mission is to provide an efficient, affordable curbside bin cleaning service and to protect residents from bacterial and fungal infections commonly detected in garbage cans.

Pricing options range from monthly to one-time. For monthly, the price is $25 for the first bin and $10 for each additional bin.

For quarterly, the price is $35 for the first bin and $15 for each additional bin.

For one-time cleaning, the cost is $45 for the first bin and $20 for each additional bin.

Quarterly cleaning is the most popular, Oliva said.

The business does not have a storefront right now, they said. Interested parties can call 619,530.1627 or 858.988.9056 to set up an appointment. Another option is to visit www.sdhappybins.com.

“They’re finding us through Facebook or recommendations at the moment,” Oliva said. “It’s going to take time to build.”

The cleaning process uses 360° cleaning heads to get into every nook and cranny, the owners said. This removes dirt and debris by blasting water at over 200° Fahrenheit while pairing it with a disinfectant to kill festering bacteria.

Happy Bins recommends cleaning trash and recycling bins, as both can have a buildup of bacteria, viruses, and germs. The first time takes a maximum of five minutes, Oliva said, with subsequent appointments for less time consuming maintenance.

The trash bin cleaning service starts with a scheduled pickup time and location. They will clean the cans on trash pickup day. Their trucks wash the bins on the spot, so customers don’t have to wait for a return time, Oliva said. Their trucks can clean two containers simultaneously, he said.

After the trash bin is sanitized and disinfected, the company deodorizes each container and places the bin in the desired location.

The partners got the idea for the business from a TikTok video they saw about two years ago. About a year ago, they decided to get serious about it.

“It was something we were thinking about. After a year, we decided to go for it,” Oliva said.
