For some skilled workers this is a much needed tax break that will help them update their tools. For others it’s a way to save on home improvements or construction projects.

In the case of the VanBurger family, the tax savings will help them to help their son build his own business.

“Paying for tools by yourself especially when you are starting off is definitely hard,” Tyler Vanburger said while shopping at Your Home Discount Warehouse in Clearwater, Florida.

The 22-year-old is a sub-contractor who borrows some of his tools from his employer. Eventually he hopes branch out with his own contracting business. “I decided that I really like this type of work being able to work with my hands and things like that and being able to be personable with the people that I’m working with,” he adds.

Florida’s “Tool Time” sales tax holiday is giving Tyler and his mother, Amanda a unique opportunity to save for his future business.

“It gives him something that if he goes and gets other jobs he can work them without having to rely on anybody and they’re his; he’s not having to rent them.”

The sales tax holiday for tools was approved as part of the $1.2 billion tax relief package signed in May 2022 by Governor Ron Desantis.

People can save money on tools and home improvement supplies like work boots, power tools and toolboxes. “It’s beneficial,” Tyler said. “It’s definitely the best thing I’ve heard about all year,” he chuckled.

State law requires Tyler to work under another contractor for the next four years. He says the sales tax holiday was the perfect opportunity to buy quality tools; while building for the future.

The tax-free holiday for tools will last until Friday, September. 9th.
